Self-expression is the truest form of art, and your wedding is the greatest opportunity to express not only yourself, but your love. As a wedding photographer, it is my greatest honor to capture who you are, who you love, and how you celebrate. I had the privilege of capturing Katelyn and Sean’s iconic NYC micro wedding at the Wandering Barman in Brooklyn. Their wedding was a perfect example that you can do whatever the hell you want for your wedding, and it will still be the most incredible, memorable, and meaningful day.
Katelyn and Sean booked me over a year in advance, after I connected with Katelyn (a fellow wedding photographer) in a Facebook group. Their top priorities were spending time with their closest friends and families, and portraits that captured the feeling of their day. They chose the eight-hour package, which ensured they would have time to enjoy, be present, and take portraits all around the city!
Love doesn’t follow the rules, and neither did Katelyn and Sean’s wedding. Katelyn wore a colorful, patterned dress in tones of burnt orange and burnished gold. Sean’s suit matched perfectly, and their outfits perfectly complemented their fall color palette. When talking about her dress, Katelyn said that white just “didn’t feel like me.” I loved the way Katelyn and Sean embraced what they wanted and threw out anything that didn’t align with their personalities, priorities, or style.
The Wandering Barman was the perfect location for this wedding. Located in downtown Brooklyn, this cocktail bar was a blank, open space that the couple could customize to be everything they wanted. Though it’s on the smaller side, there was more than enough room for all of Katelyn and Sean’s loved ones. In place of a traditional sit-down reception dinner, they brought in a food truck and ice cream bar!
Despite the rain, we were able to capture some of my favorite couple’s portraits to date. The original location we had planned for their first look was too exposed to the weather, so I scouted the surrounding area and found the perfect (covered) spot! We snuck out to another bar in Chelsea and took portraits beneath the awning, capturing the authentic NYC experience! We wandered through the Brooklyn streets, ducked into the subway, and stopped in a park. It began to downpour while we were in the park, and a stranger let us borrow their clear umbrella! These turned out to be some of my favorite photos from the whole day, reminding me yet again that art comes in the unexpected. We just need to be on the lookout for it.
Katelyn and Sean’s wedding was overflowing with personal details. After being together for ten years, they viewed their wedding as a fun celebration rather than a formal event. The couple prioritized meaningful time with their guests above all else. This was the first time their families were meeting, and they wanted to soak in the joy of having all of their loved ones in the same room. Katelyn embroidered custom favors for everyone, and the couple included traditions from both Katelyn’s Jewish heritage and Sean’s Irish heritage. They signed the Ketubah, broke the glass, and included live Irish music at every opportunity. Sean’s mom even sang a traditional Irish love song that had everyone in tears.
Want to know the best thing about Katelyn and Sean’s wedding? It felt like them. Every detail reflected their love, joy, and style. Your wedding doesn’t need to fit in a box. It just needs to feel genuine to you. The greatest part of being a wedding photographer is working with people who embrace their individuality. So let’s capture wedding photos that feel like you—a little wild, a little soft, a little magic.
