Choosing your couple’s photoshoot outfit can be the most fun or most stressful part of planning for your shoot! As an Annapolis wedding and engagement photographer, the #1 question my clients ask is, “Laura, what do I wear??” Well, fear not! Whether you’re planning for an engagement session or just want some cute photos of you and your boo, this blog is your new go-to guide for picking the perfect couple’s photoshoot outfit.
Before you dive into your closet and grab your favorite pieces, think about where you want to have your session. Your outfit should fit the vibe of the location. If you’re having an outdoor shoot, you’ll want to complement your surroundings without blending in. Or, if you’re having your couple’s photoshoot in the dive bar you met in, you can dress to match the bar’s energy!
Most of my sessions have time for two outfits. Many couples choose one casual outfit and one dressy one, but you can do whatever you want! The funkier, the better, in my opinion. This session is for you and your love, so wear something that feels true to you!
Did this surprise you? It surprises most of my clients, too. You would think you would want to wear a sparkly new outfit for your photoshoot, but the truth is, it’s better to wear something you’re comfortable in. Your favorite outfits are your favorite for a reason! You like the way you look in them. You like the way you feel. And that confidence is what we’re going for!
Plus, I like to keep you moving around in your photos. You could be running or dancing, and it helps to know how your clothes respond to those movements. So, maybe don’t wear that mini skirt you can’t sit down in without flashing someone. Or do. Depends on the vibe you’re going for 😉.
Most photographers tell people to stick to neutrals… but I think that’s boring. If you feel best in neutral colors, then please, wear neutrals! But those aren’t your only options. Jewel tones and earth tones tend to be the most flattering. Be careful with pastels, since they wash out lighter skin tones, and avoid neons that reflect onto your face and create unflattering light.
I also loveeeee photographing fun textures and layered outfits! Chunky knit sweaters are some of the best layering pieces. Feel free to experiment with different textures and layers. Rock that leather jacket, or pull out your favorite corduroy slacks. Plus, patterns are your friend! Just avoid large, distracting graphics and brand labels. Nothing is off-limits!
Here’s a good rule of thumb for choosing your couple’s photoshoot outfit: If you wear something loose on top, wear structured bottoms, and vice versa. And consider adding a lightweight, less structured layer to add movement to your photos! This could be a flowy sweater or a long skirt – whatever you feel the most comfortable in.
I always recommend picking an outfit that coordinates with your partner’s outfit, not something that matches exactly. This means wearing complementary colors and ensuring your patterns don’t clash with each other. To make this easier, pick a color scheme and make sure both of your outfits fall within it.
I hope this helps you choose your couple’s photoshoot outfit! At the end of the day, pick something that feels as true to yourself as possible, and let me take care of the rest! I am all about making sure you feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. Because getting photos with your boo should be fun! It shouldn’t feel stressful, awkward, or uncomfortable. That’s why it’s so important to work with a photographer who gets you, and is willing to go above and beyond to make you feel comfortable. My entire business focuses on the fact that everyone deserves photos that make them say “Damn, that’s me?” to which I will say, “Yes! You’re so hot!” So if you’ve been wanting photos to commemorate and celebrate your love, I would love to work with you. Explore my photography packages, or reach out to chat about your vision!
