GOOD NEWS, BABE. Your wedding and engagement photos don’t have to be boring!
There is nothing wrong with a simple engagement shoot. You don’t have to do anything crazy for your engagement or wedding photos. But, if you’re like me, a picture doesn’t truly capture you unless it’s a little out-of-the-box. 🤪
So if you’ve been scrolling Pinterest for creative engagement and wedding photo ideas, and have been a little disappointed with how typical they all are… SAME.
Here’s the thing: your love isn’t typical. So your photos shouldn’t be, either! Your wedding and engagement photos should reflect the wild, creative, colorful, boisterous extravagance of your love.
This is why I have recorded this collection of creative wedding and engagement photo ideas – with photos of my amazing previous clients to inspire you and your love!
You’ve probably heard of themed weddings, but your engagement photos can follow a theme, too! However subtle or overt, you can pick a theme that’s more than a color scheme!
Some of my favorite themed shoots involve movie and TV show characters, fairytale retellings, disco balls (I fucking love disco balls), matching outfits, and holiday vibes.
What is something you and your partner really, really love? What’s something you’ve always wanted to do together? Or something you have done together that you want to recreate?
One of my favorite things about photography is there are no rules! Your wedding and engagement photos do not have to look a certain way. They don’t have to follow a certain pattern. Heck, they don’t even have to happen in the daylight!
They can be whatever you want them to be.
Lots of engagement photos happen in a park, public garden, or the streets of the city you met. And I can’t even complain about that because I am a sucker for some sentimental photos. But just because that’s what’s “normal,” doesn’t mean that matches your vibe!
So ask yourself this: Where would you feel most comfortable taking engagement photos? What vibe do you want them to convey? Does your wedding venue match this vibe?
Of course, you can be a little more creative with your engagement photos than with your wedding photos (unless you’re eloping or doing a mini-mony, which I adore!) But even at a wedding venue, you can create your own artistic backdrop and get creative with the space!
Check out this crumpled backdrop I made for a styled shoot! All we had were white walls and our creativity but just look at how they turned out!
And hey, a hotel wedding might not be the most out-of-the-box location, but look how much fun we had roaming the halls!
Here’s the thing. When I say I’m down for anything, that means I am down for anything. I’ve followed couples into caves, stood on precarious ledges, dodged through city traffic, and braved ticks and mosquitoes for my couples.
If you have a vision for your wedding and/or engagement photos, we can 100% capture it.
Another great way to spice up your photos is to wear fun outfits!
Wearing an outfit that feels like you is the *best* way to take great photos. In fact, it’s my number one tip when it comes to feeling comfortable in front of the camera. (I talk about that more in this blog here!)
Chances are, you’ve already gone all out on your wedding clothes. But if you haven’t picked your outfits for your wedding yet, let me be the first to tell you: you do not need to wear white. You do not need to look formal. You do not need to wear anything that makes you feel like someone you’re not. This is your wedding and you should wear whatever you want! If that is a traditional bridal gown or suit, go for it! As long as you feel comfortable, you will rock it all damn day.
When it comes to your engagement photos, you get even more creativity! Here is some outfit inspiration for your engagement photos.
Matching. Whether your whole outfit matches or just your shoes, I freaking love when clients match for their engagement pictures.
Cosplay!! Literally YES! Come dressed as your favorite anime character! Bring your favorite book couple to life! Reenact a scene from your favorite movie!
Embrace Color. What’s your favorite color? What color compliments your partner’s eyes? What wild outfit have you been itching for an excuse to wear? BRING IT.
This is the time to go ALL OUT. You’re getting married. No one can tell you what or what not to do (it’s like pulling the birthday card, but better).
So accessorize! Bring the sunglasses! Wear the heels! Break out the earrings and headbands and bracelets and rings and fur coats and waistcoats and whatever else makes you feel like a million bucks.
The whole point of wedding and engagement photos is to capture the essence of your love. And all of these things help express who you and your partner are!
This includes props, like flower bouquets, picnic blankets, and champagne bottles. Heck, it even includes classic cars and swan boats! Whatever objects you interact with during your photos count as an accessory in my book!
Okay, this one is optional but HIGHLY PREFERRED. I’m not even joking.
I love it when my clients bring their pets. Not just because I’m here for all the puppy cuddles, but because your pet is an extension of your love! The moment your pet enters the frame, the smiles become more genuine. The laughter is louder. The moments I capture are more candid.
As a pet owner myself, I think bringing your cuddle buddy along just adds to the entire photoshoot experience. When you’ve got a fuzzy friend nearby, everything feels better. You’re less focused on what you look like and more present.
And if you are taking themed photos, your pet can fit the theme! Check out these cutie-patooties in costume.
These are my ideas for creative engagement and wedding photos, but if you have other ideas, I want to hear them! My whole goal as a wedding photographer is to capture your love as honestly as I can. So if you have a wild idea for your photos, I am all over it.
Because when it comes down to it, your photos should be fun. They should capture your love, your joy, and your personality. So we should do whatever makes you feel the most like yourself!
So if you have a photoshoot idea in mind, let’s get the ball rolling! Fill out an inquiry form and I’ll be in touch about your session, my schedule, and how we can capture your love!
